Musings of a mad man, who should be the next CU football coach
Well, this is all speculation, but I have seen the names bandied about on who should be the next CU coach, and I started thinking, who could be the hot commodity that no one is thinking of, and one name came to mind….Shanahan. But not who you think…
(more after the jump)
I am talking about Kyle Shanahan. For those who don’t know, Kyle is Mike Shanahan’s son and current offensive coordinator of the Houston Texans. The Houston Texans offense has been very good and many think Kyle will soon be an NFL coach. Well, now would be the time you could get him cheap. Kyle is also the youngest NFL coordinator in the league, so hopefully he can relate to the kids today, he grew up basically observing great coaching and apparently has a knack for it. In addition, Kyle grew up in this area and I am sure coming back home and being close to his family would be a great incentive.
And here is the bonus scenario, who is sitting on his butt getting paid 7 million not to do a damn thing, the mastermind Mike Shanahan. What is to say that Kyle doesn’t call up his dad and ask him to be a OC for the team, pro-bono for the next couple of years. Father and son get to hang out and groom teach football, recruits flock to Boulder to learn a pro-style offense with a two time SB winning coach. Mike comes with Kyle out to Cali or Phoenix or Florida and plays some golf and chat with some kids about CU…ohh the possibilities.
I have to dare to dream else I will be consumed with anger.

This is a wish and probably wouldn’t happen until hell freezes over but Charlie Strong from Florida would be a huge get as HC at CU.

Not against Charlie Strong
I am just thinking that Kyle maybe someone we could get now and have a similar thing to Tennessee where his dad, who lives in the state, assists him for the first couple of years, until he has the program running where it should be.

Monte Kiffen is the highest paid assistant in the country
Is CU really going to shell out that kind of money?

That is the point, they don't have to
Shanahan is making 7 million a year for the next three years to sit on the coach, he can work pro-bono and not have to worry about it, plus he just built a huge house here, I doubt he wants to leave it to go coach somewhere else next season, he can basically work low hours, stay at home, and get paid well, and help his son, seems like a no brainer to me.

That's the key.
Based on the money Bowlen is still paying him, shanny can afford to plug all of that cash into much needed facilities. He can install his kid after righting the ship (his recruiting overnight would do this) and go back to the NFL fulfilled that he will always be a legend in Colorado, and now he has a family legacy there.

so...
shanny is not only going to work for free but he’s gonna start paying for new facilities out of his own pocket? Come on… do we know that mike even likes CU? I’ve never heard anything that would make me think that. Plus a guy who hasn’t been involved in college football in 26 years will right the program overnight with his superman human recruiting skills? Come on… this is just getting silly.
Sure, it might make sense for us peasants to think “the guy has so much money anyway, he’ll do it!” but why would he? Like Texas Wahoo referenced above, I’m sure Monte Kiffen wasn’t hurting for money, he could of helped his son out for free, but he’s the highest paid assistant in the country!
But I’m still on board though, don’t let my comments get you down!

I definitely see where you're going with this
I was just saying that he could take a nominal salary, say like a half mil, freeing up the athletics’ budget to take care if some much needed facilities upgrades. He’s going to
be making at least 2 mil from Bowlen, so he won’t escalate the salary too much.
I was trying to play up the fact that Dhanny really is a Colorado guy, and wants to be part of the community. But you’re right, I’m painting him as a saint, and not only is that unfair, it probably couldn’t be further from the truth.
The sad thing is that this program needs a miracle like the one described above to stay competitive, or even avoid the dreaded Boulder Regents’ budgetary axe.

Rumorville...
Mike Shanahan will take the job once Hawkins leaves. He will only take the job if he can name a successor, which will be Kyle Shanahan. Mike’s Denver steak house opens at the end of November and he is committed to staying in Colorado. I know I’m just a crazy guy on the internet, but I’ve heard from plenty of people through the grape vine that Tom Marsico is apparently being lobbied to make a difference at CU, and he is acquainted with Mike.

you crazy internet guy!
did you really hear all the stuff from someone who would actually know? don’t get my hopes up!

I heard it from a well connected real estate developer
This guy also has connections with Marsico. He also said that Shanny and Pat Bowlen still have lunch every week— so there’s nothing but love for CO. I wouldn’t put too much stock in this, but with nothing else for us to be happy about, I figured I’d pass this along. It had me beaming.

This would be so hot.
I’d be excited but I remain very, very skeptical about it actually going down.

Interesting
That’d bring a bunch of interest back to the program, for sure. Here’s hoping…

The one thing you'll want to check with Shanahan
is whether he’d be able to properly simplify his offense for the restrictions of college training. That was the crux of our problem last year with Clawson – that offense was just too complex to install in one year, and they didn’t have two years to make a turnaround. A similar thing happened to UCLA under Dorrell; his pro-style offense was too complicated and they never picked it up well enough to be successful.
There’s no doubting Shanahan as a coach, but you do want to make sure the offense doesn’t get Weis’d in the process. SImplifying is not easy for the NFL minds to do.
