Go to the podcasts in the middle of the page and click the "Dan Hawkins Interview."

-Calls coaching a bizarre profession
-All positions need to be earned again, no starters are guaranteed their spots back
-On positives you could build on - "these guys will scrap and battle" "we are close" "several games were one score games, and several two score games" "we had chances against Texas and Missouri" "just need to cinch it up"
-On penalties - "typically not a hallmark of our teams" "a lot of it due to desperation measures" "wanting to get something done so bad" "particular games where you go holy smokes (regarding the number of penalties)"
-On the phrase "this program was burned to the ground" - "I know they won Big 12 North championships but all the bridges, recruiting and public perception was burned to the ground" "everyone around the program is new including administration" "we are coming from scratch here" "have to retool the whole thing"
-On what is considered "success" - "need to win more games" "holy smokes" "points of emphasis - getting students back on board to stop throwing batteries on the field, need to get alums, need to get administration back" "I talked to one coach that says he only does five speaking engagements a year, sometimes I do five a week" "says its not all football and not all recruiting, a lot of little things that have to go on here"
-How do alumni help - "call Mike Bohn, and ask what we need to do" "a lot of stuff revolves around money" "get budgets up so you don't have to play Sunday to Friday, you can play Saturday to Saturday with money" talks about T Boone giving Oky State $700 million
-"We all make mistakes. We can all get better"
-Said again, "we had chances against Missouri and Texas"

Ended the interview by saying he has to roll, he has a staffer to go to while Kreckman was trying to ask him about the QB situation. Hawkins didn't know when spring practice started.

He has it backwards

If he starts winning games he will need wheel barrels to carry all the money in the door. It all revolves around winning. His speaking engagements? no one wants to come listen to a coach who can’t win a game. What is he speaking about? mediocrity? All he is doing is tarnishing the school’s and program’s reputation. Its absolutely criminal what he is trying to get away with.

Chances against Missouri and Texas?

What about Colorado State and Toledo? And to say the Nebraska game was a one possession game is completely disingenuous.

Bohn, It's not to late

How come the only time I scream at my radio is when Hawkins is polluting the airwaves. He can do everything right as far as academics and citizenship, but he doesn’t have a clue how to coach. Klatt demonstrated what a class act he is by not blowing up this fraud hearing the verbal diarrhea that was coming out of his mouth. Being delusional about facts is a sign of mental illness. My suggestion to Mike Bohn (per Hawkins suggestion) is keep the blowhard silent for his remaining year and then get rid of him.

Holy Smokes!

Holy Smokes Dan the program was NOT “burned to the ground”…tarnished, sure.
Holy Smokes quit doing 5 speaking engagements a week and win some f*cking games……

Use the mantra of my new hero Hawk

“All we trying to do is win a motherf*cking game!!!!”

W's are not the barometer

Remember it’s not about the W’s, besides where would you find 5 audiences a week that would want to hear the crapola machine.

Obviously his daily substance abuse meetings are taking a toll

It explains where he’s speaking 5 times a week as well as his delusions.

The program that was burned to the ground

has produced a lot more draft picks than anything that you have brought in. Hawkins takes 5 star recruits and runs them out of town or turn them into below average guards. The program may have been on fire when you arrived but you are the one who let it burn to the ground.

I concur

Hawkins basically came in and put the program out with gasoline

I shouldn't be, but I'm stunned

I need to listen to the interview, but based upon this post all I can say is this guy just doesn’t get it. My God man, take some f’ing responsibility and say “yeah, we have not done a good job coaching these guys but we’ll change that by….”. How many excuses can we stand as a fan base?
Admittedly, I really liked the hire of Hawkins but at this point I’m pissed off by his reluctance to admit his misgivings, and I don’t want to hear the words “cinch things up” one more time.
Right now he needs to concentrate on recruiting and finding a new special teams coach. If Riddle is back I will write Mike Bohn, Benson and the Chancellor everyday for a month.

One thing that is funny to me

is that even on the articles that you read that are very critical of Hawkins anything bad is almost always prefaced by something like “he may be a great guy” or “he may be a great human being.” Not only is he a horrible coach, he seems like an arrogant jerk-off to me! Am I missing something here?

by nebraskasux on Nov 30, 2009 6:41 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

he is turning into a very unpleasant person, that is for sure

How can Mike Bohn sit there and say, “this guy is putting out a strong public perception of the program?”

we have asked to get interviews

but they stand by their policy of receiving press passes a) you have to have your readers/commentors publish their full name and it needs to be visible for everyone to read – this is how rivals gets their press pass
b) you have to have some sort of publishable documentation for purchase – that is how the papers get press passes

I would certainly love the opportunity but I don’t believe they would ever allow it.

You could print this out a couple times a year

Set up a paypal account, and I will spend $15 a year on a print subscription if you want credentials.

How do you think Kyle Ringo gets away with doing both Scout (anonymous posters) and buffzone (anonymous posters) and keeps his press credentials? it’s his relationship with the Camera.

so print something out a couple times a year and you, too can be granted an interview. Otherwise, you could freelance for the Colorado Daily and get credentials that way.

Your either with us or against us

Sound familiar, Klatt and Kreckman had been critical of this administration so Hawk showed up loaded for bear. I actually think it is a maturity issue.

I heard a CU sports department staffer comment third party “he’s just the nicest man” but I’m sure she hadn’t been publicly critical of him.

by HRBuffan on Nov 30, 2009 7:02 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Kind of like..

As phase they use here in Tezas… “Bless his heart” followed by some harsh insult…

Ex. Bless his heart, he’s the crappiest coach we’ve ever had.

Any insult is OK as long as you preface it by that phrase.

If I was Mike Bohn, I would walk into his office and tell him

I am making a change to your contract. You are no longer doing interviews, going to speaking engagements, talking to professors, talking to the students talking to academic advisors, etc. Bohn should say I will take care of that, if that is what is hampering Dan Hawkins from winning more ball games then take all of that duty away because it is a BS excuse.

I have heard every excuse in the book now: “we don’t win because I have too many speaking engagements”
“we don’t win because I have to keep students from throwing batteries on the field”

If I'm Mike Bohn

I tell Hawkins to shut it regarding his “call Mike Bohn and ask how you can help” diatribe. Also if I’m Mike Bohn I’m beginning to wonder if he is guilty of insubordination, leaking the news of the return, the call Mike Bohn statements etc…

If you’re a student, isn’t there a natural inclination to stock up on batteries after these silly comments?

Kinda funny and sad at the same time

So, I talked w/ my friend who went to the Neb game, and b/c his parents are big boosters, they had a pregame in Hawkins office – as they do before every home game. An interesting observation from him & family was that Hawk’s office was cleared out b/c he thought he was getting the boot.
They told me that they are done with Hawkins and are 50-50 about renewing their season tickets. Sounds about right

by CleBUFFS on Nov 30, 2009 7:02 PM MST via mobile reply actions   0 recs

17 Year Season Ticket Holder

Unfortunately as time goes by the reality of priority points and the seat location you waited years to get starts to argue with the threat of not renewing the tickets. I have considered for the last 4 years of upgrading to the lower level near the thirty yard line but I love my seats,( front row section 205 on the tunnel rail). I sent Bohn an email stating I was not renewing and all he did was thank me for my candor. I imagine that the long time ticket holders will renew and wait for the next regime.

by HRBuffan on Nov 30, 2009 7:10 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

maybe we got it backwards...

Maybe it was 10 excuses, and no wins? I mean, that’s all this guy does - make excuses - “we’re close”, “they’re trying too hard”, “we’re young”, “this program was burned to the ground”. All of it is BS. If winning the Big 12 North is “burned to the ground” than, hell, I’ll light the match. And Coach, quit throwing Barnett under the bus and blaming him for all your failures. Your inability to take responsibility for a job poorly done thus far is a bad example for your players.

I can't figure it out, is he a moron or the smartest person ever

Basically he is either completely dilusional or has figured out if he keeps feeding bullshit to the adminstration he will get paid 1 million a year to basically walk around CU and not do a damn thing.

How about me and the coaches did not do our job and here is what we are going to change to make sure we don’t have the same outcome, but based on his responses, it seems like he knows he can basically act like a boy scout troup leader and not get fired.

I don't have the stomach to listen

I need some time away from Hawk. But on the bright side, Westword is reporting that both Chidera Uzo-Diribe and Mister Jones are sticking with their commitments – at least for now.

yep, so is Canty

now if we can just hear confirmation from Munchie and Hirschman, that would be good news

what is a lot more surprising to me

than this news is that Westword has an article about college football recruiting!! I didn’t even know they had a sports section! Good find.

you would be amazed how much the have talked about CU

it is usually garbage like you would expect but at least twice a week they post something ripping Hawkins

Politician

Hawk handles the press like a politician. He gives very general answers. They ask him what postives there were from the season – he says “We were real close in a few games”. My guess is the name Missouri just popped into his head. I think his problem is two fold. One – he lacks respect for the media so he doesn’t really want to tell them anything and two he is over protective of the program and doesn’t want to say anything real specific. In order to not let it bother me I just ignore most of it. He’s not going to ever say anything interesting – that’s just the way it is. Right or wrong.

by Tylersworld on Dec 1, 2009 10:47 AM MST reply actions   0 recs

I agree, there is really nothing he can say now other than

admit he has been a failure so far and we know he isn’t going to say that. But I do have to say, the sayings are getting crazier and crazier which at least makes it interesting to see what will come out next.

"All positions need to be earned again, no starters are guaranteed their spots back"

Is this statement for real?

I would like it even better if it said “All positions need to be earned again, no starters OR COACHES are guaranteed their spots back”

Setting up the return of Cody Hawkins

I have to believe now that Hawkins knows he can do whatever he wants, Cody will be named starter so he can have a great senior season.

Sounds like Hawk isn't planning to fire Riddle or any other assistant coaches

From the recap of today’s press conference on Buffzone:

Hawkins said he does not plan any staff changes this offseason, but there is always a chance assistant coaches will pursue other jobs. A published report over the weekend speculated that offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau might be a candidate for the head coaching job at Portland State. Hawkins said he does not believe Kiesau is pursuing that position.

Surprised? Not really. Disgusted? Hell yeah.

by highlandsbuff on Dec 1, 2009 3:41 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

At least Jerry Glanville resigned

You know you have problems when Jerry Glanville at Portland State resigns because he is not producing and Dan Hawkins won’t admit he has a problem.

Sheesh...

I can’t even begin to describe how out of his depth this guy is – nothing concrete, he just talks and talks and says nothing! How in God’s name did this clown get this far in life and career? We gotta, we gotta, we needta, we gotta – JUST DO IT or get out of the way so we can get a decent coach.
