Darrell Scott to Transfer

3:10 PM - We will continue to update this story as we find out more but rumors are piling up about Darrell Scott requesting a transfer to UCLA.  Keep in mind that nothing has been confirmed yet but we are hearing more and more noise. A great year gets better...

3:23 PM - Not just rumors this time, CUBuffs.com has confirmed that Darrell will be leaving the program...

Sophomore running back Darrell Scott informed his coaches Tuesday afternoon of his intent to leave the University of Colorado football program.

Head coach Dan Hawkins said Scott, a 6-foot-1, 220-pound tailback from Ventura, Calif., is leaving for assorted personal reasons and assumed he would be transferring closer to his Southern California home.

6:44 PM - The Denver Post says Darrell Scott hopes to get a release to UCLA to join his uncle, Josh Smith, and has been thinking about leaving for a couple months. Darrell Scott says sorry to Buff Nation:

"I'd been thinking about it for a couple of months," Scott told The Denver Post today in a telephone interview.

Scott said he hoped to get a release from CU to UCLA, so he could join his uncle, former Buffs wideout Josh Smith, with the Bruins. Smith, a wide receiver, transferred to UCLA during the summer and is sitting out this season under NCAA transfer rules.

"That's the plan," Scott said about joining Smith

There's really nothing to say, other than 'Sorry to Buff nation,' " Scott said.

yup

At least point I wouldn’t blame him, this program is in disarray and he hasn’t performed/stayed healthy.

If its true best of luck DS. We have become a Juco for UCLA with 3 offensive starters for the bruins

“assorted personal reasons” More like “my coaches here blow wads, so I’m going where I’ll actually have a change at playing on sundays”. Look for Kasa, Stweart, Hansen, McKnight, Burney, Beatty to follow. If they’re smart.

this ought to be the nail in Dan's coffin

this is even worse than getting blown out by some lame team. Biggest recruit in years and now he’s gone, you can’t let that happen. I’m certainly not happy about him leaving but I wish him luck, no point in him staying here and not getting any playing time.

by nebraskasux on Nov 3, 2009 3:32 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

What a shame ...

The Scott era is over and it never even got started. Had a feeling we’d see this story at some point this season as the guy never could get on the field (or stay healthy as pointed out above.)

I agree with “nebraskasux” … this should be the nail in Hawkins’ coffin. Speedy Stewart is a nice back though and made it difficult for Scott to see action, but when you go after such a prized recruit and don’t ever seem to give him any opportunity to get into a rhythm on the field … this is the end result.

The wait to return to glory … continues.

I hear you.

I’ve lived in CO my whole life and grew up a CU fan. I was reading a bunch of articles a couple weeks ago on Sal Aunese’s son, Sal and the legendary teams of the late 1980’s and early 90’s. Brought back a lot of memories and good quotes from former players.

The positive news … CU is still a Big 12 team and the BCS Championship can be had in the future with the strength of the conference. I don’t know how long it’ll take to get there, but at least there is that hope. Big time football can still be played inside this great state.

I see the light

It is the train about to run our ass over. We should sign a home and home with UCLA so we can at least see some of our recruits play.

Perhaps you could ask Thayer Evans

I’m a Longhorn. I’m not trying to troll here, and I’m really not trying to be ugly because I actually like CU football and would love to see y’all step up and take out Oklahoma or Nebraska annually. But the recruitment of D. Scott was very suspect. The Thayer Evans hit piece in the NYTimes was really a low blow to Texas and confirmed to me that something shady was going on. I’m not even sure if it was CU doing the pressuring, but someone was, Thayer Evans did another hit piece on Texas last Christmas on the J.McFarland recruitment and his decision to pass on his longtime favorite Longhorns for OU. Now we see OU laying eggs. So, I pretty much think that what goes around comes around. Sometimes you win the battle but lose the war. CU’s problems appear to start at the top.
I’m surprised D. Scott didn’t leave with Josh Smith. Strange that he waited. Also, he seems out of shape and so I wonder how happy he was in Boulder. It will be interesting to see if the west coast improves his game play.

If it wasn't already

this program has officially descended into “laughable” zone. “Former five-star turned third-string running back leaves the team after being relegated to kick return role”.

This should be the signal for Hawk to resign. He recruited these kids, they are not performing, and now they are transferring. They’re is no logic that anyone can give me anymore that Hawkins should stay. If he is honorable, he’ll step down.

WTF!

I have supported hawkins through the majority of his career at CU and have tried not to bash him too much, especially these last few weeks, but this is f&%king it. Losing a 5 star recruit? Give me a break hawkins. Say goodbye to Mister Jones, along with much of our recruiting class next year.

I am so shockingly frustrated with the program right now. I so very much wish I didn’t spend the money on top of my student loans to buy tickets this year.

BUY OUT HAWKINS!!! He cannot get it done. Not now, not ever. I don’t want to read about any more excuses, watch any more shockingly amateur press conferences, nor see a once proud program continue to get kicked around!

Well he waited long enough.

I as a CU fan, watch every game, thought that D.S. should have transfered earlier. The program was going no where and was hurting his growth in playing football. He has not improved since arriving at the campus and that points the finger at the coaches. I am very tempted to urge Buff fans to boycott the next game, but would not be fair to the players. Always support the players, but the coaches… that’s another topic.

Great rants, nice to finally hear him get off

I know he has been biting his tounge the last few weeks hoping that CU would turn it around, but he is exactly right on the changes need to be made Hawkins and Bohn at a minimum.

There was an interesting article about Bohn’s hires as an AD failing most of time. All of the programs he has changed coaches at CU are floundering with the exception of Golf.

Done ... Finished....Over

There is no way CU can keep the current staff, its time to completely clean house if for no other reason than the inside culture of CU football has disentegrated.

Hawkins has no CHANCE AT RECOVERY from the damage done this season, its beyond the point of return. WHen you get to this point the only option is to throw it away and start over.

What a shame.

Where's the Talent?

I wanted to believe in Hawkins (I guess I would have believed in any coach CU hired for a certain time), but he needs to go. If you look at our team vs. top tier teams, we do not compete. Scott McKnight has been a consistant WR for us, but if he is our best receiver, we are in trouble. Part of recruiting and COACHING is to get the best players on the field. I feel like I have heard the staff say that they are going to get the best 11 players on the field at all times, but it is pretty evident that it does not happen at CU. Maybe its the crappy coaching that keeps the best players off the field? Probably to most obvious is at punt returner. WE have Espinoza back there and I bet NAte Solder is faster than Espy. He is not a threat at all. If we recruit Andre Simmons to come in and be a playmaker, then let him be! Is he that incapable of catching a punt to keep Espy in? Can he not run a streak? A post? An out?
CU has a tough enough time competing for the best recruits and after this showing there is NO WAY and top tier recruit will come to CU. Lets face it, D. Scott was beaten out by a 5’6" 175 lb running back. D. Scott was suppose to one of the fastest players on the team. One of the most decorated recruits to sign, EVER. Hawk never gave him a true chance, except for Toledo where he managed to avg. over 7 yds per carry. Jeez, that sucked.
At this point, I don’t know what you have to do to get on the field for Hawkins team, but it obvious we are now back to the same level as when Barnett’s last years. I hate to say it, but the Buffs are a joke.

If Hawkins/Bohn wont go, maybe CU needs to drop down a division to become competitive? I jest, but think how good Buffs might be versus Mesa State, Mines, CSU-Pueblo!

I should have seen it coming

I know from several comments that I had see him make on facebook that it was about to happen. He hasn’t been that happy since the season began. I wish him the best of luck and hope everything works out. I hated how people would dog the guy and he never really got a chance to step on the field and show what he could do. This not only falls on the head coach but on the position coach also. If he was your guy all spring and summer how is he not your guy in the fall. He also won the offense award for the spring. It doesn’t make any sense.

Not a surprise, but hopefully this gets the train rolling to get Hawkins out of CU

He just basically has lost all credibility with any recruit in the nation, his career is over. Alfred Williams finally had enough and is calling for a change, and you know that he is speaking for all the former players. He brought up a great point about how Hawkins is ruining these kids college expereince, that they are going to regret their time at CU and that guys with any hope of playing at the next level will be leaving if they have any eligibility left. I expect Kasa, Givens, Major and Rippy to be the next out the door.

Not to be a downer, but

how would the buyout for the Hawkinses get paid?

(I don’t know the financial details or CU’s financial status in that regard, but it seemed like people weren’t optimistic about it earlier in the season.)

by Hooper on Nov 3, 2009 7:30 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

My only hope is that some big time donors step up and force the issue

If they can ome in and say we will help buy him out as long as they get rid of Bohn and Hawkins, hopefully that will be enough. But you are right in the progam being stuck between a rock and a hard place finacially, maybe we can make Warren Buffet and honorary graduate and have him scratc a check. He just dropped 34 billion to by BNSF, maybe we could have him build a train track through CU and rename some buildings on campus.

But I would say at this point, the 3 million will be a drop in the bucket compared to the money they are going to lose by missig bowl games, having decrease in booster funds, and having a decrease in ticket sales, merchandise, and sponsorships for the next three years.

what is there to do

but laugh? How can you blame him? His shot at playing football for a living is being ruined(not to mention the 4 years he has to play in a college environment). I honestly believe I would do the same if I were a potential pro in the situation Scott found himself. I cannot believe how down I am on our program; this is a place I never thought I’d be. It really is amazing what Dan (he deserves no nickname) has done. I know Scott hasn’t produced at the level we have hoped but, god, he iis a sophmore! We block like girls! His potential is so evident it sickens me that we couldnt get him any game experience. I love Rodney, but there is no reason Scott should be a 3rd stringer on a bad team (behind Sumler, are you kidding me?). How blind you must be, Dan, with this inability to look to the future. I couldve sworn I am an alumn of a shool with a proud football tradition… this is the joke of the college football world. I hope you’re proud. I am ashamed in my once proud program. Ouch.

The problem with Hawk is...

He is clueless on what to do with elite talent coming out of high school. A lot of the big recruits we have gotten barely do shit because they get no chance to play or get better under Hawk, or he cannot keep them in line. See: Darrell Scott, Markques Simas, Lynn Katoa

For some reason, Hawkins is trying to make the point that he is such a great coach he can make shitty players or underrated players coming out of high school into solid D1 players. See: Cody Hawkins, Scotty McKnight, Rodney Stewart.

What point is he trying to make? That he does not need good players out of high school to be successful, FYI Hawk this is not Boise, you cannot get by with 2* prospects starting at a majority of the positions, in the Big 12. It does not work.

I don't think we can really blame Dan for Katoa

I know what you’re saying, but the sad thing is that we DON’T have 2* guys at most positions, our recruiting really hasn’t been that bad. Boise DOES, but is there anybody on the planet that doesn’t think they would beat us by 30 or more? Boise would of loved to get Cody and probably would of taken Scotty and Rodney too, it’s what you do with the talent you have, and Dan doesn’t do shit.

Sorry to Hear This For CU

I lived in Castle Rock for awhile and like the Buffs.

From an outsider looking in? Go hard after Gil Turner….lobby, demonstrate, or petition as hard as you can and see what this guy can do for CU. He’s a solid recruiter (from Fort Worth), great coach, and has a chip on his shoulder after being passed over by his alma mater. I think he would come to Boulder for all the right reasons. BCS eligible team, Big XII North is wide open, and Golden (no pun intended) opportunity to show his skills….especially vs the guys out Hwy 80 E.
