GOD DAMMIT!!!

Thanks for ruining my Thanksgiving Bohn, DiStefano, or whoever the hell is in charge over there. Apparently winning isn’t at all a concern with these guys. I thought the 3 million “was there” (according to Fowler).

Embarassing

It’s sad that the money was apparently available but now ESPN personalities are making fun of CU for being bankrupt for keeping someone who cannot win football games for another year.

I have to question why CU even wants to continue its football program? The academic side of the university has shown outright hostility toward it since the Barnett scandal, and this administration clearly could not care less if the Colorado is consistently embarrassed on national television.

Toledo.

Hawkins is the guy who led Colorado to a beat down at the hands of Toledo on freaking ESPN.

Why even go through the motions; not to mention spend the money, perpetuating the farce that this university even cares about its football program?

What a joke.

Well now thats settled.

I now return us to our regularly scheduled hatred of NU on this week. Ill get us started; they steal our water, their coeds are fat, and they smoke a lot of meth. Anyone else wanna run with this?

Obligatory...

N is for Knowledge, sucks to be in Nebraska, etc…..

Go Buffs.

If the rumors are true about Hawkins, then better get with it Dan… Goes a long way in the off season to beat the corn.

Yes, we know the routine...

Has Woody Paige come up with any new takes in the last 15 years?

cash

The irony is that if you pay the big bucks for a big name coach, the money will come flowing in for the university AND athletic department. I can’t imagine the money the university will now lose next year because they’re going with Mr. Nice Guy. People are more inclined to donate when there’s something to get excited about. Can you imagine how much cash would come rushing in along with the sellouts at Folsom if we got someone like The Rat ??

One the surface, though, there are reasons to believe for improvement, if nothing else.

The biggest problem to me seemed to be that Dan was too emotionally invested in Cody. There’s a reason nepotism is often discouraged; even if the beneficiary is qualified, it can be hard to be dispassionate enough to make sound judgments when that person is involved, and I always felt like the offense suffered from that.

(Grain of salt: Going to school in Tennessee, I didn’t watch all your games, but…) I thought that Cody was asked to throw the ball far too many times, and to attempt passes that he wasn’t capable of making. He tried his best – I can’t fault him for effort – but Cody doesn’t exactly have top-10-NFL-draft skills to go with that effort. The offense was a little too predictable as a result (stop the pass first; worry about the run second) and the passes were often high-risk passes without sufficient reward to justify the attempt.

But those were the plays as designed.

I had the feeling that he wanted to see his son succeed badly enough that he was ignoring the warning signs in his approach. But with the father-son relationship out of the way, he should be expected to make more rational play-calling decisions.

I’m not saying CU will suddenly turn into world-beaters, but at least things should make more sense on offense. And hopefully, getting Toledo’d will be a thing of the past.

How many games

it has been since cody benched?

by cnbuff410 on Nov 25, 2009 7:32 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Honestly, I don't know.

But I don’t expect the offense to turn on a dime when a backup comes in who hasn’t had much time.

But like I said, I’m saying this from way afar.

It's not just the quarterback that is the issue

it’s pretty much every facet of Buff football being below average.

I think most of us agree Hansen is not a long term solution

My head is going to explode. And Woelk’s timely “Hawk deserves a 5th year” makes me want to puke. I’m planning on going to the game friday but tempted to mail my unused tickets back to Bohn instead. How did this happen?

Yeah, the rest is a different story.

But hopefully Dan only asks Hansen/whomever to do what he’s capable of doing and contributing according to talent, rather than trying to make a superstar out of a yeoman.

Wait a second.....

You make no sense. Isn’t your commentary sufficient reason to fire him in the first place?

by Buff-in-IL on Nov 25, 2009 9:01 PM MST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

Yes.

I would consider nepotism a fireable offense. But given the conditions that (a) he doesn’t get fired and (b) Cody isn’t the qb, that’s what I was looking at.

What is success next season

Looks like he is getting another season……so is 4-8 or 5-7 an improvement and worth keeping hawk in 2011. This is beyond embarassing at this point and should be unaccepetable to any CU fan out there. Look at the teams we have lost to. What is CSU’s record? and Toledo? These are not worldbeaters or even competitive teams in their lesser conferences. I don’t see what this administration sees but whatever it is it is sure as hell not grounded in reality. Absolutely embarassed.

Anyone know what time

This announcement is supposed to go down? I’m traveling tomorrow to Chicago. Also, is there still a CU bar in Chicago? When I lived there we went to BW3’s on Lincoln, but is that still a good place to go for the Fuskers game? Thanks

how bout a CU bar in Los Angeles area?

Anyone know of one? Someone mentioned a sports bar on Sepulvedu in Manhatten Beach….anyone know about it or any any others in So Car?

Assume that the announcement won't occur until Bohn meets with Hawkins...

Soonest Bohn arrives back in Denver is after 9 am tomorrow, and more likely around noon. Travel time back to Boulder, etc, then meet with Hawkins. Statement is probably already prepared, so sometime tomorrow afternoon – probably late afternoon.

by Husker Mike on Nov 25, 2009 8:14 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Very Disappointed

I like the enthusiasm that Hawk had for the program but he’s had 4 years to recruit his own people and you can’t go to a game and tell me we have more than a handful of players on the team that could suit up for most top 25 programs. These are his coaches as well and all they’ve done is proven they don’t recruit very well and they don’t develop talent. Why do we need another year of this? Stop w/ the “we are just so darn young…” yes, you are also sadly devoid of big 12 talent.
FFS! 2 road wins!!! Come fricking on…
Until there is a change I’ll go to the games if someone hands me a ticket but I am absolutely done forking over money to that entire administration. Maybe they’ll realize how much money they have lost by keeping him around another year.

I feel so bad...

You guys call us names and make fun of us for being “hicks” (when, in all actuality, we have indoor plumbing and don’t have to resort to urinating in a bottle and, in turn, throw it on an opposing team’s fans.)

But now this, your broke asses don’t have enough money to buy out a coach’s contract! But I guess that’s what you get for being virtually irrelevant in every major college sport. Oh well, I guess we’ll get to keep our “I’d be the quarterback if my dad was coach, too” shirts around for another season.

Have fun being irrelevant for at least one more season.

PS: This entire comment is meant to be a joke. I actually hope you guys can turn it around, we need more strength in the North, and I don’t see “Lame” Gabbert and Mizzou becoming a powerhouse anytime soon.

GBR!!!

bring it on

We deserve whatever jokes you can think of. After this Bohnhead announcement tomorrow I expect to see a lot more Red then we normally do at this game. The only thing that could make my Thanksgiving any better is a long loud sustained chant from our student section of…. FI RE HAWK INS!!!! CLAP CLAP, CLAP CLAP CLAP

by Ever on Nov 25, 2009 7:59 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Nah. You guys weren’t incredibly hard on us when we went through the whole Pederson/Callahan debacle. I hope after next year you guys can get someone like a Turner Gill who can recruit Texas heavily and get some solid D-1 talent over there. I honestly hope you can turn things around and start beating Mizzou and have our annual post-Thanksgiving battle mean something.

GBR!!!

by Screwface on Nov 25, 2009 8:05 PM MST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

What is this D-1 talent you speak of?

You must be referring to our walkons, b/c our recruits don’t have it.

by Ever on Nov 25, 2009 8:08 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Hey, possibly the most beloved walkon we have was a Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of The Week award reciepient a few weeks ago, Matt O’Hanlon. Callahan recruited very well, he just didn’t know what to do with the talent once he got it. We still have Shawn Watson, who was a holdover from Billy C’s tenure, and we need to get rid of him ASAP, you guys want him back?

GBR!!!

by Screwface on Nov 25, 2009 8:15 PM MST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

No thanks

But frankly, Watson would be a perfect fit with Hawkins.

by highlandsbuff on Nov 25, 2009 8:31 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

You can’t do that! It’s not the player’s fault the CU coaches and admin have failed them.

GBR!!!

by Screwface on Nov 25, 2009 8:18 PM MST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

I like it

If rampant complaints lighting up the airwave on every network doesn’t do it….maybe embarassment will. Actually, it’s widely known that the faculty and admin really don’t even want a football program and have been resentful of it for years. They revel in our being terrible.

by Ever on Nov 25, 2009 8:22 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Wouldn’t that leave basketball as the university’s only source of athletic income? They need football to keep the athletic department afloat.

GBR!!!

by Screwface on Nov 25, 2009 8:25 PM MST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

It would

But if a powder blue-out couldn’t materialize, I highly doubt a sea of red will show up in Boulder.

I think the blue shirts sends the right message, that the team is reverting back to the bad days of the early 80’s. But Screwface is right. The players themselves took offense (even though the protest wasn’t directed at them), and they’re not the ones you want to rattle.

by Wolvie on Nov 25, 2009 8:30 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

That's just it, I think they did have the money

You’re telling me all the big money boosters are happy with Hawkins? That those who pay the big bills at Folsom don’t care about a 16-32 record over 4 years?

The people with that kind of money expect a return on investment, and they haven’t gotten it.

Now, it could be they won’t commit because they think previous donations haven’t been handled right. Maybe they didn’t like Hawk’s hire to begin with. Maybe they want Bohn gone as well. I don’t know. But I find it very hard to believe that if CU wanted Hawkins gone, that they couldn’t get it done.

I think it is, as Irish has said in another post, a lack of commitment to athletics. There are enough people in power that believe it’s ok just to have a team, and that winning isn’t a priority. I don’t know what the financial situation for the rest of the university is, but I wouldn’t be surprised if several faculty went to the chancellor with “Bohn can raise 3 Million just to fire some coach, but we have cuts here and tuition raises there. We deserve that money more than he does”, and so on.

Hate on us Huskers all you want. But when we got to the point in year 4 that we knew our coach wasn’t what we wanted, we found the dough and got rid of him. And when the AD wouldn’t do it…we got rid of him first!

by Wolvie on Nov 25, 2009 8:27 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

no doubt the money is there

by NYCskibum on Nov 25, 2009 8:36 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

you apparently haven't seen our basketball team play...

Although they did really well in Maui…. 1-17 in Big 12 play last year doesn’t exactly lead to financial winfalls

by Ever on Nov 25, 2009 8:28 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Am I the only one not convinced that Bohn is going to announce Hawkins is staying?

Earlier a story broke that Hawkins was told by the chancellor that his job was safe. Later today CU refuted that article. Now Bohn is holding a press conference tomorrow about the coaching situation and will be meeting with Hawkins beforehand. If Hawk is staying, what would he need to discuss with him before the press conference??

by NoVABuff on Nov 25, 2009 8:33 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

don't think they would fire him before the game.

Seems like everything leans towards him coming back. Would love if you were right.

by NYCskibum on Nov 25, 2009 8:34 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Entirely possible they fire him...

…but on Thanksgiving Day? And the day before a game?

If you’re going to fire him early, do it last Sunday, name an interim, and give that coach and the team at least some time to deal with the loss of Hawk before going back out onto the field.

To do it 24 hours or less before a game?

by Wolvie on Nov 25, 2009 8:38 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

If it was anyone other than Mark Johnson

I would still have a glimmer hope, but if anybody knows it’s him. He’s probably sitting on the beach drinking margaritas with Bohn as we speak. I really doubt he would go public with it if he wasn’t 100% sure.

by nebraskasux on Nov 25, 2009 8:53 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

I actually can see the politics of this potential firing

I’m sure many administrator and professors might question CU for paying another $3 million buyout when the entire CU system has been cutting pretty much everything. The sad fact is that the state of Colorado does not support it’s schools, period. I now live in Cleveland, OH and with all of the economic turmoil going on in this state Ohio State is still getting much better state funding than CU. As a CU grad, from Ohio, that is fucking pathetic. Sorry to be so blunt, but it needs to be said – you can only suck off the out of state tuition tit for so long.
As far as Hawkins staying around, with our schedule next season and our road woes, I’d be surprised if we go 5-7.

by CleBUFFS on Nov 25, 2009 8:46 PM MST via mobile reply actions   0 recs

5-7?

1-11 or 2-10.

by Ever on Nov 25, 2009 8:56 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

If they were to fire Hawk, they would wait until after the football banquet which is on Sunday. I don’t think tomorrow’s announcement bodes well for those CU fans hoping we won’t be there next year.
