Dan Hawkins On the Way Out?
ESPN's Bruce Feldman says that it may be coming...
Don't be surprised if Dan Hawkins is gone soon at Colorado. I'd heard money was an issue but a source this AM said CU's ready to move on.

The guys played with heart last night.
But a bad record is a bad record. We can do better.
We love the Buffs. We need them to get back on track.
Agreed
The players certainly haven’t given up on the staff, and that is good to see. I still believe that this team can be a one year turn around with the right coach.

I'm not gonna lie.
If this is true. I do kinda feel bad now. I wanted Hawkins to succeed so bad because I love his message. But I feel a lot of this years misfortunes is directly related to coaching. We shall see.
I think we all like Hawkins and wanted him to succeed
I know I did, and it sucks to be in this position. But he just hasn’t shown that he’s capable of producing wins at Colorado, and that’s ultimately what he was hired to do.

yeah
don’t feel bad. I thought he was a great hire when we first got him but he’s hasn’t gotten it done for 4 years straight and deserves to be fired, bottom line.

I thought when he first came, he might have been able to turn around the program but he just wasn't the right fit
If he does leave I wish him good luck wherever he goes. GO BUFFS
Gerald Wallace is the best player the Bobcats will have..... EVER
Pissed Off
that it took us 4 years to figure this douschebag out.
I wonder who put up the bucks. Truly hope that we get a guy who can coach.
Hawkins served his purpose. But he hasn't earned the right to continue on.
Look: We hired Hawkins to come in and clean up our program, and unequivocably, he has done that. We expected, and wanted, him to win at the same time. Unfortunately that hasn’t been the case.
Dan Hawkins was, is and likely always will be a class act. I respect the hell out of him as a person and would love to have him be a mentor to my child. Unfortunately, that is not the sole role of a Big 12 football coach. I will always continue to root for Dan Hawkins as a person.
Having said that, he has failed to execute on the field and his players have done likewise. We gave him a chance to earn the right to remain our head coach and it just didn’t work out. This is a professional decision and one that needs to be made. I wish it worked out differently, but it did not.
Let’s move on; it is time.
Went to the game last night
The kids played hard to the end. Absent the home cooking the Buffs would have won. Nonetheless, it was obvious that OSU had the better athletes and it was not even close, particularly up front. The Pokes could have run the ball for 500 yards if that had been their game plan. At the same time, the Buffs had no chance on the ground at all. If you can recruit to Stillwater, you sure ought to be able to recruit to Boulder. The Hawk has not brought in enoughy athletes, pure and simple. It takes kids that are bigger, stronger and faster to win at this level and lots of ’em.
why the hatred for the man?
The guy did the best he could and with the exception of wins has done an outstanding job. We need a new coach to get the wins and that’s fine. That does not make Hawk a doucebag though. Kinda makes you a doucebag for calling him one just becuase he lost a few college football games.

Hawkins is a douschebag because of his statements to the media. Classics such as “Darrell Scott is not playing more because he recovering from an injury” being said when DS was returning KOs at the same time. And hits like “we just need to sure up the little things” and my favorite “we are close (to winning)” after losing at home to CSU and getting blown out of stadium by the likes of TOLEDO. Furthermore – did you see the video when he was asked about DS leaving? He said “no comment”. This is the quote we get from our $1M D-1 coach after the best recruit in years leaves the program.
Hawk’s delusional nature and inability to provide valid answers to any questions is why I call him a douchebag. And he has earned it.

The best he could?
If that is your best, your best isn’t good enough. I ain’t calling him a douchebag, just an over-rated coach, we need to move the program forward. This ain’t little league bruther!, We keep score, its’ D-I football.

Whether or not you think Hawkins is a dbag
we can all agree that he has changed since the first year he got here where he brought life and enthusiasm to the program. He might be the same man in the locker room or on the recruiting trail but he has certainly not made any friends in the media or with the fan base by losing and by the comments he makes.
He has certainly changed for the worse.

The fact there this is a discussion several posts long on here
on whether or not Hawkins should be referred to as a douche bag is probably a pretty good indication of where things are with the program at the moment.
sigh
Last night was as weird an experience as I have had watching the Buffs in almost 30 years. I could not sit down for the first half and was thoroughly impressed with the effort of the defense with the exception of the meltdown in the fourth quarter. But all along I was thinking, if we do win, does that prolong the decision that I have been hoping for since the Toledo game? Does a road win against the No. 12 team in the country mean anything if their two best players are on the bench in Zac Robinson and Dez Bryant. As much as I wanted to see them win, I think we’ll be better in the long run for losing last night because of the result it likely brings. Now that being said, I do think the Nebraska game is wide ass open. Throw out the records. Throw out the history. Throw out the lame duck staff. This is a game we can, and should win. It’s our Bowl Game and we should treat it like that. Nothing like sending the Corn down to end the year.
I continue to be amazed at the lack of game plan to even try to establish the running game though. It was like watching two guys play NCAA 10 on Xbox.
Friends of mine who are in the coaching community have said that lots of the tea leaves are saying Eric Bienemy. I love EB, but not sure he’s a head coach. If a booster is paying the out though, they may have some say in who gets brought in on their tab.
sometimes it is better to not comment than tell the truth
especially about a 19 year kid that just left the program. would you be happier if he said “I’m kinda glad Darrell left. He didn’t work hard and was always complaining about his knee and he got like one yard if that on every carry – so yea – i’m glad he left.”
Would you prefer after the Toledo game if he said – “well, we really aren’t very good as evidenced by the play of the defence and man that Mahnke really is too slow. We probably won’t win many games this year.”
Did you notice that in this horrible year Hawk has manged to keep all the negative attention on himslef as opposed to the players. If you don’t think this was on purpose you don’t know much about coaching philosophy. Nowhere is Hawks job description does it say that he needs to tell the media or the fans anything.
Again, it all comes down to wins. If Hawk was 9 -3 no one would give a crap what he tells Woelk or Ringo.

What if he took some damn responsibility
What if he said, I failed the kids, my coaching has failed and I will change and make it work, but no we heard the same BS, I know this will work, we just have some little things to fix, we got out to a slow start…blah, blah, blah. Leading the nation in penalities is a direct sign that you do not have an ability to instill dicipline in players, it is a reflection of the coach, plain and simple.

He obviously didn't win....
and that’s the main reason CU should now move on. But he made it far worse than it should have been….he disrespected the media and the fans. His press conferences and interviews….they were mostly bs this entire season. He was so smug…almost like we, the fans, did not deserve to hear any information. He disrespected us…that’s what’s really got folks pissed. He acts like he doesn’t need to give us info about the team and it’s performance. He just wants to “coach” and to hell with the fans and the media. You just cannot do that as the Head Coach. I have 2 kids enrolled right now at CU, paying out of state tuition for both. Some portion of those $ are helping to pay his salary. We deserve more than he has given us.

Bowerman voting ends tonight at 10:59 MST
If you haven’t already, go to www.thebowerman.org and vote for Jenny Barringer for female track athlete of the year.
what information?
what information are you looking for? Why they are losing? Heck – you just have to watch the games to see why they are losing. Why did Scott quit? Someday we’ll find out, but how is that anyone’s business besides Scott’s. No coach is obligated to tell the media anything. Especially when talking about 18, 19 and 20 year old kids. As fans we may not like it but that’s too bad. Fans hate Hawk because he isn’t winning games period. All I’m saying is that is no reason to hate a man. Think about. People despise Hawk because the team lost more games than it won. If he was winning no one would give a crap what he says to the media.
Winning cures all
Look at Mangino. His inappropriate actions have been going on for 7 years, but they weren’t an issue until KU started losing football games.
nobody said anything about "hating" him
On the contrary. Just about every comment/post on this site agrees that Hawkins is a good man. Just hasn’t moved the program forward when it comes to winning on the field. Time for a change in leadership. I don’t thing that equates to “hating” him.

It is more than that
He ripped apart the tradition at CU, he stole the soul of the program, Hawk could care less about the CU, this was a stepping stone job, he wanted Norte Dame and he saw CU as a ticket to it, he could care less about the tradition, former players, it was all about Hawkins and his ideas for a way to get ahead and to keep his son on the field.

My take
No, I don’t believe hawk is a d bag. Just a nice guy in way over his head. I think what upset people so much was that he seemed to hide from the truth with his shortness. Why did d Scott leave? He wasn’t getting pt and he felt his talents were wasted. Why are we losing? Our team isn’t ready to play when the gun sounds and we haven’t developed our talent in the way we needed to. You see, coaching has not been executed at the level it is paid. There has been no personal accountability from hawk and that makes him come off as cold and smug. I know inside hawk is a good guy; he simply was not yet ready to head a program at this level. If we get rid of him, I hope he can learn from his shortcomings and succeed elsewhere. His time has passed at this university, no question

Perspective
The debate about Hawks treatment of the fans and media really centers around your perspective. Clearly his staff has failed on one of many possible levels. Either poor recruiting, poor player development, poor coaching, pick one. But your view of him as a person centers around what you believe is the reason for his treatment of the media and fans. You either see his actions as protecting the players by not pointing out THEIR deficiencies. Or you see his actions as protecting himself by not pointing out HIS deficiencies. I think its for their sake but I understand those who now don’t like him but I’m just not one of them. Good luck wherever you are in the future Dan. Oh and can we keep that petty buyout?
my point is this
The guy did the best he could but didn’t win. That’s too bad but he probably needs to go. Why does that make him a d bag. To call someone who gave his all with nothing but the best intentions pretty much equates to hate for that person. You’d only really call people you hate a d bag.
I agree
Good guy, tried his best, and it just didn’t work out for whatever reason. I wish it did, but such is life. Best of luck to Dan no matter what happens. I just hope that if he is indeed fired, his replacement – whoever that is – has more success on the field while continuing the hold the high standards of integrity that Dan set.

The wrong direction.
In 2007 CU played Alabama in the independence bowl. It was a somewhat competitive game that the buffs lost 30-24. At the end of the 2009 season Alabama is vying for the national championship and CU is a bottom feeder of the big 12. I remember how excited I was about the turn around from the 06 to 07 season with hopes that CU would be back to the big 12 championship game once Hawkins got all of his players on the field and used to his system. Oh how I was wrong. If the team were making bowl games and showing improvement, I would be behind them 100%, but they are not playing to their potential and they’re going in the wrong direction. I’m a realistic person, I don’t expect a national title unless the planets are aligned, but I don’t think it’s too much to ask for CU to regularly contend for the big 12 north and be perennially bowl eligible.
Exactly
We have not improved one bit from that Independence Bowl. That is a real yard stick as to why we need to make a change. I think our talent level now is higher than it was then and this year our schedule was easier. Time for a coaching change. Defense can play and has been able to for the past few years, but we need a serious offensive minded talent to come in get us to score some points.
You all are acting like it’s a done deal…you never know, Hawkins might be here for 5 years. I understand the frustration, I’m frustrated as hell too. But getting another coach is going to set us back another couple years, it seems to me. What if we really are, like Hawkins has been saying, just right there and about to break through? We’ve played close against WVU, Texas, OK State…we really could have won any of those games. I know, we didn’t. But I’m just worried that now that next year we will have all players Hawkins recruited, maybe the ball will get rolling. Maybe I’m too optimistic. Either way I want the right choice to be made.
But winning one of the three games you mention is meaningless if you can’t get yourself up to beat teams like Iowa State, Kansas State, Toledo and CSU. These are the games we should have won. If we win next year with the same players it is just one more example of the current coaching staff not developing and utilizing the talent we have. The argument we are young is tired and worn out. There are a number of ranked teams that are younger than the current Buffs squad. Its just an easy excuse for poor coaching.
Re: My Take
“He simply was not ready to head a program at this level.” , says rckymtnbuff. You think after he’s screwed up our program, Notre Dame is ever going to give him a look? HA ! Notre Dame wouldn’t even open the package of paper he sent them, if they knew how he really coaches, and the smug looks and attitude he throws out, another gut busting laugh! Hawk wouldn’t make a pimple on Lou Holtz’s ass ! Holtz has forgotten more about f-ball than hawk ever dreams about knowing.
All out of (Hawk)love?
Like many of the posts here, I like Hawkins the person. He’s a man of solid values and character, a good father and husband. I haven’t always agreed with Hawkins the coach, especially this year, but if its true that Hawkins will be bought out and releived of his coaching duties, should we be careful what we ask for?
Here’s a couple of interesting takes on Mangino’s problems at Kansas. Just 2 years removed from a 12-1, top 10 finish, the big guy’s about to get kicked. Clearly Mangino is the exact opposite of Hawkins in how they approach their jobs. If there’s to be a new coach, should it be someone more like Hawk or Mangino?Old school or new wave, touchy feely? Is there another alternative? Consider the sources, of course, but there’s definitely a school of thought out there that the Buffs could do worse than Hawkins.

Hawkins
Look, we all think that Hawkins is a good guy and has improved the culture of this team – so kudos to Dan for that. My biggest problem is that he brought in talent and then didn’t get them on the field. I’ve watched countless programs across the country develop at least a few plays to get their new top guys the ball as true freshman – why don’t we do that? How hard is it to draw up a play to get them involved 3-5 times a game even if they don’t know the whole play book? Seriously, that is a joke and POOR COACHING. Another joke, the development of the O-line. Tons of talent and they are the most undisciplined and underperforming line in the nation. Unforgivable.
Dan Hawkins has no one but himself to blame – he is not a good coach. So, take the $3 million Dan and leave now, we’ll be better off.

The problem
with todays college football is everyone wants results right now. a fast food approach to winning. look at some of the great programs of years ago. they had the same coaches for decades, win or loose. Tom Osborne was at nebraska for 20+ years before he brought a national championship back to Neb. Granted he had his team ranked and always a contender. College’s just dont believe in the long haul anymore. were a nation of “want it now”. Don’t know if Hawkins is the right guy, but how many bigtime coaches started out like this, or worse. Just a thought.

Did Osborne have 4 straight losing seasons?
I am guessing if he did, they would not of stuck with him. Bottom line, when you have four strait losing seasons and the last three get progressively worse it is a downward trend that you probably aren’t going to break. No one here expected a national championship, we expected a team that could compete, make a bowl, and every now and then make a run at a BCS bowl, but when you are getting your ass kicked by CSU and Toledo, something is wrong. I am guessing if Osborne had Nebraska losing to the likes of CSU, Toledo, ISU, and Mizzou at home, he probably would of been getting some heat.

Hawk and crew needs to go!
Dan Hawkins and his playboy crew have not only damaged the Buffs, but also the entire Big 12. This guy needs to go and the Buffs need to bring someone in that can bring the Buffs back to strength so that the Big 12 will be back on the map. Maybe they should consider bringing back McCartney to be AD and to groom someone special, similar to what Osborn has done with Pelini and what Snyder is doing at K-State. Seriously! This will be important so that when teams like Nebraska beat the Buffs, it won’t be like beating a team coached by Nancy Grace!
