Post Game Thread: Colorado Buffaloes Go 3 - 8, Lose to Oklahoma State
I really am at a loss for words. Part of me was somewhat satisfied that the Buffs were in the game, part of me is absolutely embarrassed to once again have a second half lead and blow the game. Colorado had a 21 - 10 advantage in the third quarter while forcing four turnovers (should have been more) but once again, let up the big play or missed the field goal or couldn't convert on offense or couldn't stop a third string quarterback.
I think my post from earlier today sums it up best. Use this post to voice your comments but I will let my earlier post do the talking tonight:

Seeing Hawkins smiling and laughing at the end of the game really said it all. What coach in there world does that. I didn’t even want to listen to KOA after the game. I don’t need to hear that asshole speak anymore. Quote of the night; Chris Fowler- “Colorado has raised enough money to buy out Hawkins contract.”

I am a senior student here at CU - about to graduate
The Nebraska game would be my last game here as a student and I absolutely refuse to go unless Hawkins is fired and at least an interim coach is named. My family has had season tickets for 10 years now and I have had student season tickets since I began going here, but I am done at this point. I am sick to my stomach watching this program anymore. I bleed black and gold and this is honestly hurting my pride. I just can’t take it anymore. Please help us all out Mike Bohn. Stop the pain. I am begging you. Hawkins need to be axed ASAP.

It’s almost as if God has a plan, and knows CU might be better off for the future if they lose now. I don’t know what to say about that game, at least it was fun to watch but it really bothered me the way Hawk laid down at the end and didn’t give Tyler a shot on 4th and 10. Then, going for it on 4th and 5 even though sucktastic Goodman had just clanked the uprights on a similar FG try. What’s there to say anymore

Played like Fresh and Soph tonight
Not mean’t to be offensive, but continued mental mistakes and inability to capitalize on situations is a trait of a young team….
Could have mailed in the game tonight, but they DID come out and play, so I give the team credit.
The core talent is in place on the team.

no offense
you’re a great poster, but we’re not that young. Plus, it’s year 4, that can only be used as an excuse for so long. It seems like we’ve had this never ending series of games where our opponent makes tons of mistake, we get a half time lead, and then we get our doors blown off late in the game. That is bad coaching.

I still think we are fairly young, as a team....
sure, there are lots of other teams that are younger than CU and are doing quite well. But, you must admit that we are pretty young….especially on offense. Hansen, Stewart, Simas, the entire offensive line……..that’s not really experienced. And compare it to the team we were playing tonight……Ok State was playing NINE Seniors on defense…..and FIVE of their six O lineman (including the tight end) were seniors……so I still consider us fairly young in many respects.

ok
we might be “fairly young” but like you said, so are a bunch of teams that punked us this year and who’s fault is it exactly that we’re young? I’m just on a mission now, I won’t say anything positive until he’s gone, sorry…

Exactly
Lou Holthz may be a doucher (it WAS a clip), but in his book, he talks about a year when one of his teams won a NC, and it was an especially young team. The coaches made it clear early on to the players that youth would never be an excuse for not knowing what you were supposed to be doing. When Hawkins leans on the youth excuse again and again he reinforces that it’s okay for the guys that haven’t been the program for 3 or 4 years to make mental mistakes. I remember the striking difference in pre game comments between Hawkins and Pinkel before the Mizzou game. Hawkins played the youth card, while Pinkel said it was a young team but that’s no excuse. We’ve got one game left. Exactly how long does it take to learn assignments and refrain from making the same mistakes over and over?

Just to Clarify
I said we “played like” a bunch tof Fresh/Soph, its more of a description than an excuse. Good coaching can take a group of young players and eliminate those mental errors and instill a confidence/mentality to put a game away when the opportunity arises. CU just can’t seem to achieve that level this year (or really any of the past 4)
It is year 4 of the Hawkins era, and on the field performance has not progressed over that period of time, which is why a change is necessary.
I do have a glimer of optomism because the core group of playmakers are fresh/sophs/jr’s, its just a matter of getting a group of coaches who can help them acheive a level of maturity and execution this staff doesn’t seem to be able to do.
I appreciate all the post on this thread, as there is some real insight into everyones post… and Holtz is still a douche bag.

definitely played with heart....
so give the team lots of credit. We just can’t seem to make big plays when we need to…….or, all too often , we make a big mistake at an inopportune time. A change is necessary……not only at the top, but throughout much of the assistant coaching staff as well. It seems like we have a core group of young guys that might give us plenty of excitement for the next couple of years, but need different leadership for it to come together.

apology
Ol’ Hawk had his shot with me. I was optimistic about his future in Boulder. I’ve been following this program since I could walk and tonight really became despair beyond dispair. This program has traditionally played down to lesser opponents and up to far better ones. Tonight should have kept with tradition, but with the number 12 team in the country beat, Hawkins folded. Our defense played their hearts out (forget those dropped INTs…) I agree with previous posts- the talent is certainly there. These guys ran with Texas a few weeks ago. It wasn’t long ago that we were watching Major Applewhite cry on the sidelines as the buffs rolled past. But tonight was rock bottom. Hawkins balked when a competent coach would have known no defeat. Tonight’s loss is inexcusable. I wore black and gold in ‘05 in the darkest days. But I almost find myself hoping that we get blown out by the huskers to ensure Hawkins’ departure, as this may just be what is best for the program.

I hope we crush the Huskers...
for two reasons: 1, I hate the Huskers, 2, I beleive Hawkins will be fired either way

I hope you're right
but I’m really hoping an official decision is made before the game. I want to root for CU against the Huskers with the passion that I normally do (biggest sporting event of the year for me), but if there is still a chance of him saving his job, no matter how small, I don’t think I can. It was really tough to watch the game last night and root for us knowing that if we won (even though OSU was pretty much playing without their 3 best players and made enough mistakes that we absolutely SHOULD of won) we would be beating the “#12 team in the country on the road” and that couldn’t of been good.

So tired of excuses
Does it really matter at this point why we just aren’t very good….? The young card has been played out. We are now 0-11 I believe on the road against Big 12. We can’t even beat Wyoming or Iowa State. There is NO excuse for that. Young just doesn’t cut it. No excuse does.
The ONLY thing that matters now is that Bohn sacks up like he should have done long, long ago and while we’re at it Phil DiStephano mans up and Bohn and Hawkins are done. Bohn needs to go b/c I do not trust that he will find the right replacement plus he’s incompetent and Hawkins should have been gone long ago for obvious reasons. Both are delusional and full of crap.
This is hands down the worst year of Colorado football I have ever witnessed and its disgraceful to see what this program has gone from when I graduated in 95 to now. I am at a loss. We now get excited over little things like oh my God Hawkins or Hansen completed a pass… or wow we got a couple of first downs and man did you see that catch… this used to be and should be commonplace! We have gone so far off track as someone mentioned before this team is unrecognizable to me and my friends who went to school in the 90’s. We have forgotten what good, solid, swagga Colorado football is b/c it has been so many years since we’ve seen it! I will give props to the defense though, they have had some solid performances. But watching sack after sack tonight made me sick. In fact, for some reason just the general attitude I saw from players to coaches left me with a bad taste in my mouth, like they think it’s okay. Don’t get me started on Hawk’s complete smugness that oozes from him everytime I see him speak . This could just be me being cynical — but that’s what 3-8 does to you.
How much worse does it have to get before someone steps up and makes some changes!?
Memo to DiStefano and or Bohn/whoever makes decisions- now would be a good time to grow a pair.
PS Please ban Jesse Palmer from all future CU broadcasts, he’s atrocious and a complete d-bag.

always enjoy your passion
but I’ve just got to say (since I think it’s the second time you’ve said it): We did beat Wyoming! Don’t make it sound worse than it is!! :-)

Also, Jesse Palmer is canadian...
Just sayin….
Im proud of my team. I salute you on your Alamo Coach Hawk, but we showed heart tonight. We had no business being in that game so late, but we showed grit and heart to stick in it. Sure its a soul crushing loss, but in this season of soul crushery, it at least is nice to see us going down fighting. just like the song says, never give in.
I’m looking forward to one last game with Hawkins at the reigns, hopefully a fair well win, because Nebraska freaking sucks, then the excitement of a new coach. Thats going to be thrilling, having the optimism of a new dude coming in, learning their ridiculous tendencys, all of it is great. We had a decent run Dan Hawkins, you may not be a great coach, but you were just what this school needed, and you made my 4 years at CU more complete.

Ok this is getting (or has been) bad...
I found myself last night worried that CU would WIN and Dan Hawkins would keep his job. I find that I want the players to get yards, score points, and win, but I want Hawk to lose in every way, I just can’t stand him and it bothers me that I actually feel this way about my alma mater. I was excited to see them up 21-10 and even Cody looked fine when he was in, but there was a sense of impending doom. The real difference between this team and a good team seems to be the ability to put the nail in the coffin. A good defensive stand and another good drive in the 4th could have put it away. This team doesn’t play with a "win at all costs" mentality. I got the feeling after that it was like "well no one expected us to do this well, so it’s a moral victory" and that just doesn’t cut it. It appears that they have the talent to be a Big 12 North contender, but there seems to be nothing holding the team together when the going gets tough.
by NPCannon on Nov 20, 2009 7:47 AM MST reply actions 0 recs
absolutely.
“Nobody expected us to do this well…so…good enough” = quitting = bad coaching

Anybody who roots against CU, ever, is not a fan
I don’t care what anybody says about this. As a fan of the Buffs, I want them to win. Always.

No doubt about it.
Anyone who wants them to lose for whatever reason is a dork.
