Rivals Recruiting Point Rankings 2006-2009

Hello Buff faithful,

I am tired of hearing about how we simply don't have athletes on the field every single week we play (from announcers or the press). I decided to see how bad we were using really the only measurement we have of recruiting success.

These are Rivals point rankings (see table below) from their recruiting website sorted by highest average points. Many of us can agree rankings don't mean too much, but they can tell a story of under/over achieving. We see 2 teams at the top (corn and A&M) who are underachieving and 3 teams at the bottom who are overachieving (Kansas, Missouri, and TT).

Our beloved Buffs are right in the middle (with high variation, but the coaching change can play into that) and we are clearly underachieving. Granted, these are biased statistics in the first place, because they are based on qualitative measurement of how 'experts' think a player will develop. And even if our highest ranking came in 2008, still, can we not field a decent team every week? I know you can't coach speed, but if you aren't actually utilizing that speed (Simas, Simmons, etc.) doesn't that fall on a coach who is clearly in way over his head? I know we have a better team than our record indicates......

Good Work

I would love to see this by offensive skill positions.

I agree, good job

I’m so sick of hearing that too. It’s not that we’re that slow or small or weak or whatever, it’s that we’re poorly coached and don’t play with any passion or fire (in my opinion anyway). On paper we should be slightly better than Mizzou yet they’ve outscored us 972 to 4 over the last few years (maybe I’m exaggerating a little, but I think that‘s about right).

Just for the hell of it I looked at our first 4 opponents this year too and figured their 4 year averages:
CU: 963.75

CSU: 76.25
Toledo: 171
Wyo: 95.25
WVU: 947.25

Pretty funny, huh? On paper (I know, I know, it doesn’t mean that much) we’ve had more talent that all of our opponents this year. Yet CSU manhandled us in the trenches and Toledo’s offense looked like OU against us. It made me so mad when the TV announcers were going on and on during the whole Toledo game about how they were so much faster and more talented. Bullshit! It’s coaching, coaching, coaching, coaching, oh, and coaching.

Agree

Our coaches, especially Hawkins, are not doing their jobs. Watching games today, I have noticed that most other coaches seem like they are excited to be on the field coaching, are fired up when their team does something good, and are a little more into the game. Unlike Hawkins with his arms crossed seeming uninterested. Also, why does he wear headsets with two earphones…how does he communicate with his players. Most other coaches have only have the one earphone.

We could use a nice recruitment of a QB too

Do these rankings

include players who signed but never played, or have left the program? I would guess that guys like Katoa and Nuckols have probably given us higher recruiting rankings, but didn’t exactly help us out on Saturdays.

yeah, they do

but you would have to figure that every team loses a few players that they sign. Katoa (5-star, right?) and Nuckols (4-star) did pump up our rankings a little.
