Colorado Offers to K Zach Grossnickle

Colorado is using another offer to try to stabilize the kicking position.   The kid from East (Denver, CO) already has an offer from Kansas and is scheduled to make a trip to Boulder here in a couple weeks (January 16th).  I just hope that Grossnickle doesn't come to CU and become a problem like the kickers we currently have.  Boy, I bet Hawkins is wishing that he wouldn't have overreacted by giving Goodman a scholarship after that chip shot FG.

Regardless

of Goodman being on scholarship or not, at least we offered this kid. I’ve been very worried about this recruiting cycle, and while the defensive line concerns are very real, I think Hawkins is making the right moves up to this point. The defensive line issues will ultimately determine the final “grade” of this class, but if he can make it happen, I think we’ll be just fine.

Ya we won't be complaining about not having an extra scholarship

if Grossnickle turns into anything close to Crosby. I don’t think we have a clue what his ceiling really is because he has only been kicking since his junior year. On his scout page it has listed his career long is 53 yards this season but he kicked a 61 yard FG this summer in the Ray Guy camp.

The only thing that somewhat worries me is they had him listed as 39-45 on extra points but hopefully that is all because of high school blocking.

I hate to be the wet blanket here

and don’t get me wrong, I hope Grossnickle comes here and does well, but all the kickers we have now were big shots coming out of high school too. Goodman has a big leg but it doesn’t matter if you can’t kick it between the posts. Kickers like Crosby come along once every 20 years or so. If Grossnickle turns out to be a average kicker who can also punt (which would kind of get us back a scholarship) that would be great, but I’m not expecting too much. Since I don’t follow high school kickers at all I don’t know if this is right or not but I think Ringo said something like he was a solid punter but needed a little work at kicking.

Um, how about "come to CU, Zach?"

I just hope that Grossnickle doesn’t come to CU and become a problem like the kickers we currently have.

Hey, Rox, let’s try to get him here first and then let him figure out how demanding and critical the fans are going to be the first time he’s on the field.

As far as high school blocking, there is none in Denver Public Schools., IMO.

Where did you see the XP stat? I saw 37 of 39 on Maxpreps. And the Rocky shows he was 32 of 36 xps. So he missed between 2 and 4?

CU must have really felt the pressure

to offer him. He must have really liked Kansas. Getting him in here is step one for sure.

I have to believe...

Grossnickle will be a Buff…didn’t read all the other comments on here yet but I’m assuming everyone’s feeling good on this one.

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.

and you wonder why recruits are hesitant to commit to CU?

Since I don’t follow high school kickers at all I don’t know if this is right or not but I think Ringo said something like he was a solid punter but needed a little work at kicking.

I didn’t see this comment, in fact, I thought Ringo was high in his praise.
You might want to look at the kid’s stats first. Remember, East was knocked out of the playoffs, so he managed to rack up all his kicking points in 3 fewer games than some other players, but he still led the state.

Here are the two leaders in 5A. Willenbrock went to state championship (also a good kicker, but he doesn’t punt and he’s going to Dartmouth to play Lacrosse.)

Player ……………………………. gm .. fgm … fga … pct .. .. LNG .. XPM .. XPA .. PTS
Z. Grossnickle (Denver East) … 10 . .. 12 …. 13 …. 0.92 …. 53 .. .. 32 . … 36 …. 68
R. Willenbrock (Cherry Creek) …13 … 11 …. 12 …. 0.92 …. 50 .. .. 35 .. .. 36 .. .. 68

Huh? Why are they hesitant? Who says they are?

I don’t think I read that Ringo in an article but one of his blog entries or chats, I don’t care enough to look it up.

Yes, his high school stats look great but my point earlier was that I’m sure Goodman and Davis had similar stats in high school. A lot of kicking is mental and just because you’re succesful in high school doesn’t mean you’re gonna be in college.

Again, I have nothing against the kid and hope he comes here, I just think it’s a little early to pencil him in as the starting P/PK and the whole 4 scholarship kickers still worries me a little bit. There are kickers ranked higher than him with NO scholarship offers or offers from really low prestige schools.

and what’s with this site and posts about kickers? I’ve never seen a football site where the most active threads always seem to involve kickers somehow! :-)

I mentioned this a while ago

and honestly, the comments shot up when Diante Jackson committed too, but the kicking this past season was just terrible. It’s one thing to have a problem with a red zone offense that can’t punch it in those last ten yards or so, but it’s another when your offense struggles to get past the 25 or 30 and you consistently leave all those points on the board. The kicking game crippled as much as anything else last year.

I got his Stats off of his biography on Scout

I agree I am definitely in a bad mood after this year’s kicker as I knew Goodman in HS and was really rooting for him.
Heres the Scout thing about the EP

Biography:
A lifelong soccer player who just started his football career as a junior, he has a career long of 53 yards as a senior midway through the ’08 season. Kicked a record 61-yard field goal at the Ray Guy Camp in summer of ’08. As of Oct. 10 2008, was a perfect 6-for-6 on field goal tries on the season, and 10-10 in FGs and 39-45 on extra points for his career according to the Rocky Mountain News.

do you think...

…Goodman will now be a walk-on if Grossnickle commits?

by MDBuff on Jan 6, 2009 11:53 AM MST reply actions   0 recs

a little hesitation ...

I just read between the lines when Grossnickle didn’t commit when Riddle offered him in person. He said he wanted to think about it.

Didn’t sound like he was sold on the idea of being a buff, but you never know what was included or excluded from an interview. We don’t know who else he is talking to or how good KU is at recruiting.

do you think…
…Goodman will now be a walk-on if Grossnickle commits?

No, I don’t think Hawk would do that. Recruiting nightmare and Hawk generally stands behind his guys, if they aren’t flunking out or breaking the law.

I think they are hoping that adding another kicker will “inspire” the existing three scholly players to step up their respective games. It can’t be a perfect situation that Grossnickle would walk into (if he commits,) unless we all expect that the current players are going to be ecstatic and welcoming to see him on the field, competing for “their” spots.

Maybe they are all great guys. I’m just saying there’s got to be an awkward moment or two coming up, no matter how the coaches frame it.

Rox, about Goodman

I knew Goodman in HS and was really rooting for him

So am I. But at this point, a little healthy competition could be just the thing to fire him up. We know he has the leg. He just needs to find a way to bring that talent to the game.

Sounds like Kansas is....

cooling on taking a Kicker w/this class so I would have to believe Grossnickle will be a done deal to CU…

Not that CU wasn’t already in great position with this kid, but now with the only other major player out, they should be in real good shape.

caught myself

I was thisclose to posting some premium info … but I remembered.

Grossnickle has a third offer. Don’t think it’s a threat to CU, but he has a third. It was on a message board, not in the offer list as yet, but posted by a site admin.
