Hawkins - Growing Sense of Futility
While I still hold out hope that Danny Boy is the right guy and the Buffs can rebound in 2009 I grow more concerned everyday. Hawkins and Helfrich have created no offensive identity in three years. I have no idea what kind of offense they are attempting to run. The substitution patterns are useless. The personnel packages(groupings) are a joke. The latest announcement that Cody will play most of the game against Nebraska is dumbfounding. Why waste Hansen's redshirt? Cody is a great kid but gives us almost no chance to win in Lincoln. Unfortunately, he was less than mediocre against the Cowboys. What is the point of playing him versus Hansen?
The look on Dan's face throughout the game was very telling. He looked like a 5th grader in detention(I doubt they still have such a thing)confronted by an algebra equation. Why haven't the special teams gotten better? Why won't we run any toss plays, where are the tight ends? For someone who supposedly is a big motivation guy he does very little during games. All his Cliff Notes version philosphical BS needs to be turned inward and he needs to make some tough decisions around his offense. Ending the season 2-7 after 3 wins is all on Dan and indicative of an extremely poor job.

You make a ton of great points that I have argued on this site for a while now... This is a loaded post with a long response!
Offensive identity is certainly a problem. Pro Hawk supporters will tell you it is hard to drive the car with three flat tires. Youth and injuries are the main claim to the lack of success for the Buffs this year. Yes, a solid argument but since the Texas game the Buffs have had the same cast of players minus the running back. NYCSkibum and I have this beef every week that even 6 weeks after the Texas game that the Buffs still haven’t found one play, one defensive weakness, one formation that will work against the opposition on a consistent basis. It is very frustrating when every time the offense gets on the field, there is no confidence in them that they can score.
This year the Buffs schedule has been littered by horrible defenses, young defenses, slow defenses and the Buffs are on pace to have the worst offensive output they have ever had in Big 12 play since they joined the Big 12. Yes that includes the 2006 team. The Buffs need to score 56 points to average 20 points a game in the Big 12 which is what the 2006 team did. Yes the 2006 team that won two games and had Bernard Jackson at quarterback.
I think the argument between Hansen and Hawkins is argument that can go either way. Looking back on it, if the Buffs would have beat A&M, it was a red shirt well spent. It made Buffs bowl eligible and that was huge. As of right now, you can attribute one win to Hansen and a possible non bowl eligible team. Is it a wasted scholarship, thats a loaded question. Hopefully Clark Evans will make it a non point in the next couple of years. I dont think Hawkins played extremely bad last week, he has zero help on offense in terms of stretching the field and blocking. The offense is a mess and I wouldn’t put the entire blame on the QB position. I would say 15% on the QB, 60% on the coaching and the remaining portion of injuries and youth.
Don’t even talk to me about special teams…i called for the whole operation to be blown up (here)
All that being said, I want to see next year with Mr Hawkins. I still want to believe he is the guy. I want to see him coach his guys, not hurt, not too terribly green. I think he should have that opportunity. They definitely need to figure out special teams and start developing an offensive chemistry!

Great points
I think you still have to give Hawkins 2 years, this is a team that has been decimated by injuries, suspensions, guys quiting or getting booted, hard to build any identity when there is no consistency in players. Getting rid of him now would set the program too far back, we have to hope he can rebound next year on the field and recruiting to build some consistency. That being said, I still think we will win in Nebraska, I am somewhat confused at wasting Hansen redshirt, but Cody I think gives us the best chance of winning next week in Nebraska. If we do win, then I think you might as well start Hansen in the bwl game (if we get invited).

If we win, there will be some serious singing in the streets!
The best thing that can happen is to end on a good note for recruiting but also to get three extra weeks of practice.

Agree with all of you on most of your points
About the whole Hansen thing, he got the win against KSU and then pretty much hasn’t been given any opportunity in the passing game since then. Can he throw or not? Cody has not been throwing accurate balls this year. Period. If Hansen can throw AT ALL I think he gives us a better chance to win and should be playing. There was no point in pulling his redshirt if all you’re gonna let him do is run QB draws, he won’t be much further along for next season than if he didn’t play at all. Like irish said if we pulled out the win against A&M and we were already bowl-eligable I would feel better about the whole situation, but the horrible play calling and Cody’s INT in the endzone blew that. I knew after Cody led the comeback against ISU that Hansen probably wouldn’t set foot on the field again this year. Cody keeps getting more chances, but in my opinion he has proven already that he is NOT the future of this team, I don’t see why they won’t “give the keys to the offense” to a guy who still might be.
I know it’s not gonna happen, I’m just annoyed by the whole situation.

I'm giving D. Hawkins the benefit of the doubt here but...
I think he knows Cody isn’t the future or the answer at quarterback, but I also think right or wrong D. Hawkins feels Cody gives them the best chance to win now. One thing that came to mind and this is purely speculative but with as fragile as the whole situation is between injuries and youth maybe Cody is a leader that guys on the team rally around and that is more important to winning right now than anything….Just a thought.

I too am still 100% in the Hawkins camp...
I think continuity is essential in building a college program. That said you obviously can’t let a guy go on forever without results but Hawkins isn’t yet to that point of futility in my opinion.
You do hit the nail on the head though as far as my biggest concern of offensive ineptitude. CU is bottom 3 of the conference from an offensive standpoint and while yes you can argue that that’s because this is the best offensive league in the country that wouldn’t appear to have anything to do with it considering CU is 94th in total offense and 106th in scoring offense. You also point out the lack of offensive identity and bouncing back and forth between the spread, I-From, running QBand throwing QB…you won’t get any argument from me on that point either.
What I would like to see CU accomplish next year is clearly first and foremost heal up…get all those key players back in playing shape and ready to take the field. Second establish an offensive identity, you’ve got the talent at running back and the size up front so let’s use it. Run to setup the pass, control the ball and put the ball in the endzone. Yes that’s going against the trend in the Big12 but maybe that can be a good thing.
The reality is the youth excuse is beginning to run thin and it is time for results but I think I’m with Broncoman on this one when I say as long as we see an improvement next year and not a total collapse we are still two years away from thinking about making a change at the head coaching spot.

From what I have seen of Hansen leads me to believe he is a very good player. Clearly inexperienced but the Buffs will need a serious change of pace at times to win in Lincoln. If he doesn’t get 40% of the snaps then my concern about H & H will continue.
No doubt it has been a tough injury year…Ryan Miller and Speedy were devastating, but
the real question is what happens next year. The wide receivers aren’t going to be much better. H & H don’t know that tight ends are eligble for forward passes and they clearly hate sweeps and tosses. We should be a power running team next year with Scott and Speedy(Sumler even looked capable) and Hansen. All current indications are that Hawkins can’t or won’t make necessary changes to fit personnel.

Polk...
will be out there next year as well at the running position…but it’s definetly time to beef that huge line up and use it.

The WR's may be okay...
If we get Simmons to qualify at 6’2 220 and a 4.5 forty, he would be helpful and I have heard that Simas is tearing things up in practice everyday. He was a 4* who was ineligible this year. Says he has figured it out now. Then you got Darden coming in off this class and it looks like Diante Jackson who is a 4*. I still have faith in Josh Smith. He needs to commit himself to be a better player but there is no doubt he can be a threat with the ball in his hands.
From a personnel standpoint, QB is the only thing that should scare Buffs fans next year in my opinion, that and replacing Daniel Sanders. The pieces are there, now lets see if Hawkins can coach them up.

Hope you are right
I agree with all the points, again it really comes down to the OL, let Hawkins or Hanson, or Evans stand in there and get to throw the ball, then I think the recievers will look better. I agree, really need to get the TE involved in the passing game, and develop what the offense is going to be to help everyone out. I think if we go to a more power running style with maybe some spread mixed in on certain possessions, then we will do much better next season, hopefully the OL isn’t decimated like this year.

Great stuff by the way...everyone has had some great thoughts on the whole deal...
and it’s good to see that for the most part everyone, while frustrated, is pretty reasonable.
