I was right there
I was at the 5 yard line across from student section 2 rows up and that is right where the hit was. He got one of the biggest boos of a players ever and what bothered me is watching him celebrate afterwords. I could here J Fly groan and it was completely dirty. At first I said hey its football but now seeing the reply he should have gotten ejected.
I'm just going to throw this out there...
…but you get flagged for sure if you go high, now we’re hearing complaints about going low? What are these guys supposed to do? He didn’t go after Smith’s knees, he tried to hit him in the waist, which is the safest way to make an effective hit. This is punt coverage, where things move at a ridiculous rate of speed. If you look closely at the video, Snipes tries to get his head turned at the last second so he can lead with his shoulder, and in fact actually hits Smith with the side of his head.
If you want to see what a cheap shot on a punt looks like, check out this video. I’m glad Josh Smith wasn’t hurt, but I’m going to have to respectfully disagree that there was anything particularly dirty about that hit.

he didnt have the ball, you can't hit a punt returner when he doesnt have the ball.

He was faking a catch
How is the gunner supposed to know he wasn’t really catching the ball? You can’t turn your head and find the ball in punt coverage. Obviously you can’t hit a punt returner before he catches the ball, but the way Smith executed his fake, Snipes had to believe he was going to make a hit right as he caught the ball.
If Smith wanted to achieve the desired result (a touchback) and protect himself at the same time, he should have just squared up and blocked the guy. You got your penalty, and your punt returner/wide receiver wasn’t hurt. I don’t know what the big complaint is.

It shouldn't have even been a penalty
It was a square hit to the middle of the body. I don’t think you can come in any cleaner than that. It wasn’t helmet to helmet. He wasn’t hit from behind. Snipes was doing what he was supposed to do. It wasn’t his fault that Smith tried to oversell the touchback.
Man do I hate Longhorn fans, well except for the ones that actually went there.
Rule Clarification
My friend is a high school ref and has connections with college refs and I asked him to pass along the video and see what happened from a ‘rules’ standpoint.
Basically Snipes got called for unnecessary roughness because he led with his helmet – looking at the ground. That’s a gray area and more of a judgement call. It’s an iffy situation considering it was a hit in the mid section rather than at the knees or to the head.
Now Smith was faking being a ball carrier and he is open game to get hit. The ball was ten yards over his head so he should have been prepared to either block or prepare for a hit. The Halo Rule was abolished in 2003 so any talk about that should just stop.
Overall – is it a dirty play? HELL NO. Should there have been a penalty – probably, it’s a judgement call though.

He lead with his helmet and hit him early
That is called a spear and you are supposed to allow the returner an oppurtunity to catch the ball, so basically there could of been two flags thrown. That was a dirty play but what do you expect from K-State, nothing but JUCO kids who probably can’t spell their own names.

Hey TB, dont want to get in an argument. Hope your trip was fun to Boulder...its a non factor, your right, but it still could have been an issue for Smith.
You at least agree it should have been a penalty right? I mean this idea of faking a punt return catch has been around longer than I can remember. Either way, he could have really messed up one of our best players by flying a hundred miles an hour into his mid section when he didn’t even have the ball.

Had a good time in Boulder
Just wish I would have had more time to enjoy Denver/Boulder.
Don’t worry, there’s nothing personal about this. I just happen to disagree, and wanted to make my thoughts known. I can agree that the refs decided, in their judgment, that the hit was unnecessary roughness. I think Smith probably should have protected himself, but our gunner at least arguably led with his helmet. In the end, because I’m a fan, I give our guy the benefit of the doubt. But I can absolutely understand why the penalty was called.
Now the pass interference call on Blair Irvin, I will not compromise on that. Terrible call.

Agreed.
The blown call happened on 3rd down. That led to the Buff’s second touchdown. Unnacceptable

First off, you can't just assume the guy is about to catch the ball and blast him,
second it was a spear, the gunner job is to locate the ball, not assume the KR will catch it, he has to give him space and allow him an oppurtunity to catch the ball, even if it is over his head. It’s like saying you can blast a punter because you figured he hadn’t kicked the ball yet, so you put your head down and ran full steam ahead and cremed him. Dirty filthy play by scum bag JUCO retards.

The one thing that this video doesn't show
is where the ball lands. Why do I ask this? Because the ball doesn’t even fall in the camera view. The punt landed a few yards back in the end zone – 10 yards behind Josh Smith. Trust me, I was there.
Does Smith not become a blocker then? He knew the ball was well over his head. He should have been looking downfield instead of pretending to catch the ball. I’ve tried to find specific rules on this, but couldn’t find what I was looking for, does anybody know the official ruling on this one?
Either way, Snipes probably shouldn’t have gone in there – but how is this any different than someone getting blindsided for a block (completely legal)?

In my opinion....
It is a huge cheap shot……
Not neccesarily illegal, shouldn’t have been a penalty.
But If I was playing I would try to hit 81 every single chance I had for the rest of the game. I would hope every last Buff was looking to do the same.
